Bad Oral Health = Arthritis?

According to a study in animals, the bacteria responsible for gum disease may also play a role in triggering rheumatoid arthritis. Until recently, most research showed the two conditions occurring alongside one another without a clear connection. This work suggests a possible direct link, though it is early research.

Periodontitis is a gum disease brought about by the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis, which takes up residence in plaque and eventually contributes to inflammation and gum disease. According to the researchers who led the study, mice exposed to the bacterium not only developed oral health issues but also developed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) roughly twice as fast as mice that were not exposed. The exposed mice were also reported to experience a faster breakdown of bone and cartilage material. These are findings in mice, and results in animals do not always translate to people.

Researchers have been working on the development of a vaccine that would protect against Porphyromonas gingivalis. In the meantime, traditional oral hygiene remains the most practical defense. Brushing twice a day is widely emphasized and commonly practiced, but flossing is often overlooked. Flossing is just as important as regular brushing, if not more so. Most of the damaging oral bacteria reside between the teeth, where a toothbrush generally cannot reach, which makes flossing an important way to reduce this type of bacteria and support good oral health.

As with most new research, these findings need time to mature and are not yet corroborated by a broad body of cross-examining research. Because the experimental group consisted of mice, and although correlations can be drawn between the physiology of humans and other mammals, the findings are not yet definitive. The sensible takeaway is to maintain good oral health as part of taking care of your overall health, and to see your dentist and doctor regularly.
