Knee Joint Pain – Causes and Treatment

knee injury

Whether it’s a dull ache or a sharp pain, knee pain is a common problem in older adults. One study of adults over 50 found that one in four suffers from knee pain. And, nearly two-thirds had some type of knee pain during the 12-year study period. Knee joint pain is often caused by overuse. Pain in the knee joint may often be due to a form of arthritis. It may also be due to bursitis, tendonitis, sprain, or fracture.  Knee pain is a very common complaint. While painful and frustrating, the good news is that many causes of knee pain are often very treatable.

Arthritis and Knee Joint Pain

The two most common types of arthritis that affect the knee joint are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis develops as a result of “wear and tear” of the cartilage in the knee. This type of arthritis is more common in people over the age of 50. As knee cartilage deteriorates, pain develops. It often gradually escalates from a sharp pain that worsens with knee movement to a constant dull, aching pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where a person’s immune system attacks multiple joints in the body. Pain, swelling, redness, and warmth over the kneecap may develop. Unlike osteoarthritis, knee pain from rheumatoid arthritis tends to improve with an increase in activity.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes the joints to become inflamed, which leads to pain and stiffness. RA often begins in the hands and feet first. It often affects the same joints on both sides of your body.  Articular cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones. It allows the joints to move smoothly. As we age, it gradually decreases. That is when knee joint pain may begin to appear.

Other Causes of Joint Pain in the Knee

There are four primary ligaments in your knee—two collateral ligaments and two cruciate ligaments. A direct blow to the knee or a fall can cause injuries to these ligaments. Usually, a popping noise is heard, along with sudden swelling, and a giving out of the knee with this type of injury.

Patellar tendonitis refers to inflammation of the patellar tendon. This is a large tendon that connects your kneecap to the top of your shinbone. Patellar tendonitis is more common in people who engage in sports or activities that require frequent running and jumping. Often times, people with this condition describe a constant dull pain that becomes sharp with activity.

Prepatellar bursitisYour prepatellar bursa is a fluid-filled sac. It is located right over the kneecap. Prepatellar bursitis is when the bursa becomes inflamed. It is most commonly caused by people who frequently kneel, like gardeners, plumbers, or floor installers.

Less common knee joint pain could be from an infection, gout, bone spurs, kneecap fracture, knee cysts, or tumor. These maladies would need to be diagnosed by a medical professional.
