Stress and many other outside factors can produce chemicals in the body that result in increased inflammation. Meditation techniques decrease decrease and therefore reduce inflammation and pain. The best part about meditation is the effects you can start seeing from just incorporating a few minutes into your schedule each day. To start out, take 4 to 5 deep breaths and count to 10 with each inhalation and each exhalation. Doing this 4 to 5 times a day can begin to produce positive results.
Acupuncture is a popular Chinese therapy during which tiny needles are placed along the meridians of your body in an effort to release trapped energy, or chi. Like meditation, acupuncture aims to bring out the endorphins that act as natural pain killing substances. It also encourages blood flow to the area which helps flush out byproducts like lactic acid that are key components of joint pain.
Another easy and fun way to try and ease joint pain: listen to your favorite music! If you can make it slow-tempo classical music, even better. According to Arthritis Today, listening to music can reduce disability associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other types of chronic pain, as well as decrease the pain and depression associated with these conditions. Music stimulates the periaqueductal gray (PAG) area in the mid-brain, which is where we store our own pain killing substances. Music has also been shown to block the amygdala in the brain, which controls negative emotions like stress. Listening to music is also pleasurable because the brain exhibits increased levels of dopamine (the pleasure center).
As you can see, there are plenty of actions you can be taking right now to get your joint pain levels under control. Getting older and dealing with arthritis doesn’t have to be painful. Turn up the radio, start telling jokes, and get that ice bag out, and you’ll be on the road to feeling better.
